Taurus may be the oldest constellation anyone has named. The Bull of Heaven appears in Mesopotamian records four thousand years ago, and there is a long-running argument that a group of dots beside a bull in the Lascaux caves is the Pleiades, which would push it back seventeen thousand years.

The story of Taurus
The bull is the first sign of the zodiac in the older Mesopotamian ordering, and the Epic of Gilgamesh has the Bull of Heaven sent against the hero; the constellation's brightest star, Aldebaran, has been used for navigation for millennia. Naming children after zodiac signs is a specifically twentieth-century American practice, and it clusters hard in the 1970s alongside a general interest in astrology; Taurus, Leo, Aries and Libra all appear in the records of that decade. Taurus's best year on file is 1976. Leo alone survived the fashion, because it was already an established name for other reasons.
Meaning
bull
Latin taurus, a bull, from an Indo-European root that also gives Greek tauros and, through a chain of borrowings, English steer. The word names the constellation, the zodiac sign and the animal without distinction. It is also a Roman cognomen, borne by several senatorial families.

The Ishmael test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Taurus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ishmael climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ishmael's path sketches the road Taurus is walking now.
Taurus sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
