Tamyra
Feminine · “date palm”
Georgia was ruled for thirty years by a woman, and the language had no word for it. Tamar came to the throne in 1184 and was styled mepe — king — because that was the only term available, and her reign is still called the golden age.

The story of Tamyra
Tamar of Georgia inherited from her father, ruled in her own right for three decades, expanded the kingdom to its greatest extent and presided over the period Georgians still treat as their high point — the century of the national epic and of the great monastic building. The title question is not a curiosity: Georgian mepe means monarch and had no feminine, and rather than invent one the court used it as it stood, so the inscriptions call her king. She was canonized. The name went from Georgia into Russian use and from there, eventually, into American records, where the Hebrew original is invisible and the Georgian queen is unknown to almost everyone using it.

Through Tamara from Hebrew tamar, a date palm, which reached Georgia and Russia by way of the church. Tamyra is an American respelling with a y in the unstressed middle syllable, where it changes nothing audible.

The Eulene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tamyra's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eulene climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eulene's path sketches the road Tamyra is walking now.

The trade-off
- A documented Hebrew root and a documented medieval bearer who can be looked up.
- Three short forms, two of which are full names in their own right.
- Three open syllables with a clear central stress.
- Tamara and Tamira are both commoner, so the spelling will be given often.
- The middle vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
- It is strongly represented among older generations and places the name in the last century.
