Tam
Masculine · “heart and mind”
Tam is given to both — 987 boys and 902 girls since 1880. See Tam as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Tam arrives from two directions and they have nothing to do with each other. In Scotland it is Thomas cut short, the form Burns used for the farmer who rides home drunk past a haunted kirk in the most famous comic poem in Scots. In Vietnam it is a word in its own right — the heart, or the mind, depending on how you translate a character that covers both — and it is given to daughters and sons alike.

The story of Tam
Burns published Tam o' Shanter at the end of the eighteenth century, and the poem made the short form permanent in Scotland — Tam has been a standing name there ever since, and it gave the language a word for a hat. The Vietnamese name is entirely separate, ordinary in Vietnam and given to both sexes, and it reached American records with the resettlement that followed 1975. That is why a name three letters long shows a nearly even split between girls and boys in the American data: two traditions are overlapping in one spelling, and one of them does not divide names by sex at all.
Meaningscholars disagree
heart and mind, or twin
The Vietnamese Tâm is a single character meaning the heart in the older sense that includes the mind and the moral sense — closer to the English word soul than to the organ. The Scottish Tam is Thomas, from the Aramaic te'oma, a twin, which began as a nickname for the apostle and replaced his name entirely. A child called Tam may be carrying either, and the record cannot separate them.

TAM
One syllable, rhyming with ham, in Scots and in American English. Vietnamese carries a tone on it and the vowel sits slightly differently, but the difference is small and American speakers are understood either way.

The Aram test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tam's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aram climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aram's path sketches the road Tam is walking now.
Tam sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three letters and one syllable — it fits any form and survives any accent.
- It is genuinely established in two unrelated traditions, which is rare and interesting.
- The Vietnamese meaning is unusually generous: the heart in the sense that includes thinking and conscience.
- The record shows it used almost equally for girls and boys, so it belongs to either child.
- Because the split is close to even, forms and rosters will guess and will often guess wrong.
- The Vietnamese diacritic will not survive American records, and with it goes the tone.
- In America it will often be assumed to be short for Tamara or Tammy rather than a name of its own.
