The story of Tajh
Taj is a Persian word that spread with Persian court culture across the Islamic world and into South Asia, where it appears in titles, place names and personal names. Shah Jahan built the mausoleum at Agra for Arjumand Banu Begum, known by her title Mumtaz Mahal, between 1632 and 1653; the building's popular name is a contraction of hers. As a personal name Taj is used in South Asia and, since the twentieth century, in African American naming, where it arrived with the general adoption of Arabic and Persian names. The Tajh spelling with a silent h is American; its best year is 1990.
Meaning
crown
Persian and Arabic taj, a crown or diadem, borrowed into Urdu and Hindi. The Taj Mahal is generally explained as a contraction of Mumtaz Mahal, the empress's title, meaning the chosen one of the palace, reshaped as taj mahal, crown of palaces. The h at the end of this spelling is an American addition and is silent.

The Caine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tajh's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Caine climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Caine's path sketches the road Tajh is walking now.
Tajh sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Persian meaning and one of the most recognized buildings in the world behind it.
- One syllable and four letters, easy to say and to spell.
- Recognized across Iran, South Asia and the Arab world.
- Taj without the h is the standard spelling everywhere.
- The silent h does nothing except distinguish the spelling.
- English speakers use a hard j rather than the zh of the original.
