Taina
Feminine
Taina has two entirely separate homes. In Finland it is an ordinary women's name, a short form of Tatiana. In Puerto Rico it refers to the Taino, the indigenous people of the Caribbean whom Columbus met in 1492. Its American peak is 2001, the year a Nickelodeon series named Taina finished its first run.

The story of Taina
The Taino were the dominant people of the Greater Antilles at contact and gave English a set of words that are still in daily use — hurricane, hammock, canoe, barbecue, maize, savanna, tobacco. The population collapsed within a century of 1492, but Taino ancestry is substantial in the modern Caribbean and the identity has been the subject of active reclamation in Puerto Rico since the 1970s. The name Taina belongs to that. Its American record then received a separate push: the Nickelodeon series Taina, about a Puerto Rican teenager in New York, ran from 2001 to 2002, and the birth record peaks in the same period.

'a Taino woman' in the Caribbean reading; a Finnish short form of Tatiana
Two unrelated sources. Taino was recorded by the Spanish as the word the people of Hispaniola used for themselves, generally reported as meaning 'good' or 'noble'; the feminine Taina is used in Puerto Rico as an identity name. Separately, Finnish Taina is a short form of Tatiana, which descends from the Roman family name Tatius and has no recoverable meaning. Which one an American Taina carries depends entirely on her family.
