Sydnee

Sydnee traces back through four owners. A French abbey gave its name to a Norman family, the family name became Sydney, a British Home Secretary bore it, an Australian harbor was named after him in 1788, and the city's name came back as a girl's name in America.

The story of Sydnee
Thomas Townshend, Viscount Sydney, was Home Secretary when the First Fleet sailed, and Arthur Phillip named the settlement at Port Jackson after him in January 1788. The city grew large enough that its name detached from the man entirely, and by the twentieth century Sydney was a place before it was a person for most English speakers. As a girls' given name it rose in America from the late 1980s; the respellings followed, and Sydnee peaks in 1999. A family choosing it is choosing a city named after a politician named after a family named after an abbey — four steps, none of them visible in the word.

From Saint-Denis, a French place name; or Old English "wide meadow"
Two derivations compete. The older one takes Sidney from Saint-Denis in Normandy, giving a Norman family name de Sidenei. The more recent scholarly reading prefers Old English sīd, wide, with ēg, an island or well-watered land, from an English place name. Both are defensible. Sydnee is an American respelling of Sydney; the ending carries no separate meaning.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sydnee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Socorro climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Socorro's path sketches the road Sydnee is walking now.
