The story of Suki
English used to make pet forms by substituting a consonant — Robert to Hob and Bob, Richard to Hick and Dick, Susan to Suke and Sukey — and Sukey was ordinary in eighteenth-century England, familiar enough to appear in the nursery rhyme about the kettle. It faded entirely. Meanwhile Japanese suki entered English through anime and through the word itself, and modern American use of the name draws on that road far more than on the English one.

liked, beloved — in Japanese; or a short form of Susan
Japanese suki means liked or fond of, and it is one of the first words most learners meet; it is used as a name element though not usually as a full given name in Japan. Separately, Sukey and Suky were standard English pet forms of Susan from the seventeenth century, made by the same rhyming habit that gave Bob from Robert. Two unrelated roads at one spelling.

Two syllables, stress on the first. Japanese gives both beats even weight with a very light u — closer to s'ki in ordinary speech — and the American saying keeps the vowel full.

The Rashunda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Suki's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rashunda climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rashunda's path sketches the road Suki is walking now.
Suki sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters, entirely phonetic, and said correctly by everyone at first sight.
- Two genuine and quite separate ancestries, one English and one Japanese.
- Short and open, which pairs well with a long or complicated surname.
- In Japanese it is an ordinary adjective rather than a name, which Japanese speakers will hear.
- It is very short and will be read as a nickname on official documents.
- Suki, Sukey and Suky all circulate and only the first is current.
