Where it comes from

The story of Stefon

Stephen was stoned at Jerusalem while Saul of Tarsus held the coats, and the church read his name — a victor's wreath — as a sign from the beginning. The name became one of the great Christian names in every language: Étienne, Esteban, István, Stefan, Szczepan. American use of Stephen and Steven was very large through the twentieth century, and Stefon appears from the 1970s as a respelling, chiefly in African American families, peaking in 1990 alongside Stephon and Stefan.

Meaning

Crown, garland, wreath

From Greek stephanos, a wreath or crown, from stephein, to encircle. The reading is settled. Stefon is an American respelling combining the f of the continental European spellings with an -on ending; neither carries meaning, and the underlying name is Stephen.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Stefon went to 16 boys in 2025, but Stephon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 62, which makes it the 866th most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,742 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 27,550 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 106,755 for Stefon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
