Where it comes from

The story of Thurmon

Thurman Munson captained the Yankees, caught more than a thousand games with hands that were permanently damaged, and was famously difficult with journalists and famously beloved by his teammates. He had learned to fly so that he could get home to Canton between games. In the summer of 1979 he was practicing touch-and-go landings at the local airport when the plane came down short of the runway; two passengers got out and he did not. The team played that night. His locker was left exactly as it was and moved, still intact, when the stadium was rebuilt.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The likeliest source is an Old Norse name whose first element is the god Thor and whose second is about protection — a name meaning something like protected by Thor, brought to England by Scandinavian settlers and surviving as a surname long after anyone had stopped worshipping anybody. A separate English route from a place name is also possible. The spelling with an o in the second syllable is American, and it does not change the sound at all.

How the name formed

  1. an Old Norse name built on the god Thor
  2. Scandinavian settlement carries it into English
  3. it survives as an English surname long after the religion
  4. used as an American first name from the 1910s
  5. a baseball catcher makes the surname famous

Fashion outlook

Thurmon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a genuine Norse history and a concrete namesake without being weighed down by either.
  • The sound is plain and unfussy in a way that suits a man as well as a boy.
  • It is unrepeated — a boy carrying it will not meet another.
What to consider
  • Thurman is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected regularly.
  • It reads unmistakably as a surname and some people will treat it as one.
  • It is firmly of the early twentieth century and has had no revival.
