The story of Stanford
English place names in -ford record the crossings that made settlement possible, and they are dense along every navigable river. Stanford and Stamford both descend from the stony ford, and there are several of each in England. The surname followed the places and crossed to America, where it became a given name in the ordinary nineteenth-century fashion. Leland Stanford, railroad magnate and governor of California, founded a university in 1885 in memory of his son, which attached the name permanently to an institution; the given name's best year in United States records is 1931, well after that.
