The story of Solange
Sollemnis described an annual religious observance, and its English descendant solemn came to mean grave only later — a solemn occasion was originally a scheduled one. Saint Solange was a ninth-century shepherdess of Berry, killed resisting an abduction, and she is patron of that province. The name is used in France and, through French Caribbean and Louisiana lines, appears in American records.
Meaning
solemn, religious
From Latin sollemnis, appointed for a religious occasion, from sollus, whole, and annus, a year — a rite held every year. English solemn narrowed the sense to grave, which the Latin did not primarily mean.

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning with a genuinely interesting semantic history.
- Sol and Ange are both usable short forms.
- A documented French saint with a real regional cult behind her.
- The final zh sound does not exist at the end of English words and gets flattened.
- The English word solemn is a narrower sense than the Latin.
- It is strongly marked as French, which is usually the intention.
