Where it comes from

Our story of Skylah

Our story of Skylah is a story of a borrowed word that changed jobs. Norse ský meant a cloud, and English took it, then quietly promoted it to mean the whole sky while the native heofon retreated to religion. American naming took Sky as a name in the twentieth century and built Skyla, Skylar, Skylah from it. The Dutch surname Schuyler sits nearby and may feed some of them. The word's history is real; the name is fifty years old.

Meaningscholars disagree

sky; cloud

The Sky- front is the English word, from the Old Norse ský, 'cloud' — English borrowed it for the cloud and later for the whole heaven, displacing the native heofon. The -lah ending is modern. It may alternatively be a form of Schuyler, Dutch for 'scholar'. Neither is established.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Skylah went to 79 girls in 2025, but Skyla is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 336, which makes it the 642nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,656 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,784 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 20,345 for Skylah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
