Where it comes from

The story of Elysia

Elysium appears first in Homer's Odyssey, where the sea god Proteus tells Menelaus he will not die but be carried to the Elysian plain at the ends of the earth. Virgil took it up in the Aeneid, and Latin writers formed the adjective Elysius, feminine Elysia, for anything belonging to that place. The word outlived the belief: seventeenth-century Paris named a new avenue the Champs-Élysées, and English poets kept "Elysian" for any scene of unbroken calm. Elysia as a given name for girls is a much later and thinner story — it turns up in American records only in the modern era, in quiet but unbroken use ever since.

Of Elysium — the fields of the blessed

Two serious readings compete. The first takes it straight from Latin Elysius/Elysia, "Elysian, belonging to Elysium," from Greek Ēlysion. The second treats it as an elaborated English spelling within the Elise–Alicia–Alyssa family, alongside Elisia and Alysia, where the meaning follows whichever of those names you trace it to. Worth adding: the Greeks themselves never explained where Ēlysion came from, so even the first road ends in an unexplained word.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elysia went to 149 girls in 2025, but Elisia, Elicia and Elycia are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 226, which makes it the 736th most-given girls’ name of the year — 707 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 7,112 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 10,787 for Elysia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Plugs straight into the Ellie cluster, so a very familiar short form is available from day one without any explaining.
  • The spelling follows a word English already knows — Elysian — which gives people a hook when they ask how it's written.
  • A documented classical line running back through Virgil and Homer, unbroken as a word even where the name is recent.
  • Sits comfortably beside Elisa, Alicia and Alyssa in sound without duplicating any of them.
  • The vowel pattern carries easily in Spanish, Italian and French, which matters in the states where the name is strongest.
What to consider
  • Expect to spell it. Elisia, Elysia, Alysia and Elysha are all in circulation, and the L-Y-S in the middle is the part people guess wrong most often.
  • There is no single agreed pronunciation. That is manageable, but it means a lifetime of a small correction at introductions rather than one settled version everyone reaches for.
  • Elysium is, in the Greek and Roman sources, where the blessed dead go. Most people won't make the connection at all — but some readers of classics will, and it's better to hear it now than at a christening.
  • She is likely to be the only one wherever she goes. That means no surname initial in the classroom, and also no shortcut: the name will always be introduced rather than recognized.
