Rayleigh
Feminine
Rayleigh is given to both — 3,000 girls and 98 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Rayleigh is a real place before it is a name — a town in Essex, England, written down in the eleventh-century Domesday survey when it was still a clearing in the woods. It is also the word behind Rayleigh scattering, the physics of why the sky reads blue. In American use it arrived far more recently, and it says itself on first hearing: RAY-lee.
How old is the name Rayleigh?
Rayleigh first appears in US birth records in 1995 — 30 years ago. The typical Rayleigh is a kid of about 8 — this name's wave is very recent. About 3,000 people named Rayleigh are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Rayleigh
The name begins as English geography: Rayleigh in Essex, a settlement recorded in the Domesday survey and still on the map today. From the town came a barony, and from that title came the scientific label — Rayleigh scattering, the explanation for the color of a clear sky, and Rayleigh waves in seismology. As a first name in the United States it is a much later and separate arrival, sitting inside the large family of -leigh spellings alongside Kayleigh, Bayleigh and Haleigh, where Ray and Rae were already long-established names in their own right. So two roads meet at one spelling: an old English place, and a modern American way of building a name out of a short one.
Meaningscholars disagree
most likely 'roe-deer clearing' or 'rye clearing'; in modern American use, read as Ray + the -leigh 'meadow' ending
The Essex place name appears in Domesday as Ragheleia. Scholars split the first element between Old English rǣge, a female roe deer, and ryge, rye; the second element, lēah, is agreed and means a woodland clearing or meadow. Separately, the American given name behaves as an elaboration of Ray or Rae with the fashionable -leigh spelling, which carries the same 'meadow' sense. Both readings are defensible, and neither cancels the other.

Pronouncing Rayleigh
RAY-lee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The Essex town and the scientific term are said the same way. The main hazard is not saying it but writing it: many people will hear RAY-lee and reach for Raleigh.

The Vanna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rayleigh's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vanna climbed just as high around 1986, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vanna's path sketches the road Rayleigh is walking now.
Rayleigh sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Says itself on first hearing — the RAY-lee sound is already familiar from Bailey, Riley and Kayleigh, so no one has to be taught how to pronounce it.
- Comes with ready-made short forms, Ray and Rae, both of which are established given names rather than invented nicknames.
- Has a genuine documented history behind it: an English town in the Domesday survey, and the name attached to Rayleigh scattering in physics.
- Uncommon enough that a child is very likely to be the only one in a class, while the sound itself is not unusual at all.
- Spelling will need repeating. Raleigh — the North Carolina city and Sir Walter Raleigh — is the version most Americans know, and Rayley and Raleigh will both come back on forms and roll calls.
- It sits in a crowded sound-family with Riley, Kayleigh, Bailey and Rylee, so expect the occasional mishearing and the occasional 'wait, which one?'
- This is a very recent name in American use, so it currently reads as belonging to young children rather than to adults — something worth picturing on a résumé as well as a lunchbox.
- Recorded here as a girl's name, though Ray and Leigh both travel in either direction, which gives a Rayleigh room to choose how formal or neutral she wants to sound.
