Where it comes from

The story of Jennie

Jane was among the commonest English women's names for four centuries, and Jenny and Jennie were its ordinary affectionate forms — the spinning jenny of 1764 is named from the general sense of a woman's name. Nineteenth-century American families registered Jennie outright in very large numbers, and it stood in the top twenty for girls through the 1880s, alongside Minnie, Bessie and Carrie.

Meaningscholars disagree

God is gracious

Through Jane, from the Hebrew Yohanan, 'the Lord is gracious'. Through Jennifer instead, it goes to the Welsh Gwenhwyfar, 'white phantom', which is an entirely different name. In nineteenth-century use the Jane route is much the likelier; in modern use the Jennifer one.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two substantial formal names can stand behind it, from unrelated languages.
  • Warm and immediately easy to say, and legible to a child learning to write.
  • It has a deep nineteenth-century American record of its own.
What to consider
  • Jenny is the commoner spelling and the two are constantly confused.
  • The parentage depends entirely on when and where the name was given.
