Where it comes from

The story of Siddhartha

Siddhartha Gautama was born to a ruling family in what is now Nepal in about the fifth century BC. The name has stayed in use across India, in both Hindu and Buddhist families, and is common in Bengal and Maharashtra in particular. It reached Western awareness separately through Hermann Hesse's 1922 novel, which is about a different character of the same name and became enormously widely read in English in the 1960s. The American 2015 peak reflects South Asian immigration rather than the novel.

Meaning

Sanskrit "one who has achieved his goal"

A compound of siddha, accomplished or perfected, and artha, aim, purpose or wealth. Artha is also one of the four aims of life in Hindu thought, where it means material prosperity. The compound is transparent in Sanskrit and the etymology is not disputed. Pali gives Siddhattha.

How the name formed

Pronouncing Siddhartha

sid-DAR-tuh

Three or four syllables depending on how the dh and rth clusters are handled. Sanskrit distinguishes aspirated and unaspirated consonants, so the dh and th are not the English sounds in this and thin. The stress falls on the second syllable.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, transparent and carries a considerable philosophical charge.
  • Sid and Siddhu are both easy short forms in different registers.
  • It is one of the most recognizable Sanskrit names worldwide.
What to consider
  • Ten letters and three or four syllables require spelling out constantly.
  • The aspirated consonants are not reproducible in English.
  • The association with the Buddha is total, which some families welcome and others weigh.
