The story of Shaylin
Traditional Irish orthography used silent consonants to show what had happened to a word grammatically — a dh or a gh could mark a consonant that had been softened out of existence centuries earlier — and the result was spellings that looked forbidding and were entirely systematic. The 1948 reform, and a standardized written form issued a decade later, removed a great many of them. Names had already left for English by then, carrying the older spellings and getting rewritten by ear on arrival: Séaghdha gave Shea, Shay and Shae, and American parents built Shayla, Shaylee and Shaylin on top. None of those exists in Ireland.
