Where it comes from

The story of Kezia

Cassia came from further east than anyone in the ancient Mediterranean could point to, which made it expensive and slightly mysterious; the classical writers had elaborate wrong ideas about where it grew. It appears in the Hebrew scriptures as a trade good and a fragrance. The name reached English through Puritan reading of the whole biblical text, and it crossed to America with that. In American use the affectionate form Kizzy developed and became a name in its own right, particularly in African-American families, where it has a long and independent record.

Meaning

cassia; the aromatic bark

Hebrew Qetsi'ah is cassia, the bark of a tree related to cinnamon but coarser and cheaper, used as incense and as a perfume. It is named in Exodus among the ingredients of the holy anointing oil and in Ezekiel among the goods traded through Tyre. The reading is documented and undisputed.

Kezia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 76 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kezia went to 60 girls in 2025, but Keziah, Keziyah and Kesia and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 433, which makes it the 564th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,258 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,712 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 26,788 for Kezia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented biblical name with a concrete, sensory meaning rather than an abstract virtue.
  • Kizzy and Kez are both real short forms with independent records.
  • Uncommon without being invented, which the biblical stock supplies more readily than most sources.
What to consider
  • Kezia, Keziah and Kaziah are all in use and the final h gets added or dropped.
  • Two pronunciations are both long established, so the child will hear both.
  • It is unmistakably a scriptural name and will be read as a statement of tradition.
