Where it comes from

The story of Livie

Olivia appears in Twelfth Night and the name follows the play into English use; before that it is very thinly attested. Livia is Roman and independent — a family name carried by, among others, the wife of Augustus — and it stayed in Italian use continuously. English shortened Olivia to Liv, Livvy and Livie, and Italian and French produced the same trimmings from Livia. The -ie spelling is the affectionate English one, and it has been standing on its own as a given name for some time now rather than only as a short form.

Meaningscholars disagree

olive — or, through Livia, a Roman family name of unclear sense

Olivia was put into English by Shakespeare, who seems to have built it on Latin oliva, 'olive' — the tree of peace and of oil. Livia is separate and much older: a Roman gens name, possibly connected to liveo, 'to be bluish or leaden', which is not a flattering derivation and is not secure. Livie serves both, and which one a family means is usually not something they have thought about.
