The story of Shanice
From the late 1960s, Black American families coined given names in large and well-documented numbers, drawing on a consistent set of components: the prefixes La-, Sha-, Ta- and De-, and endings borrowed from French, from existing English names and from sound alone. Shanice belongs to that tradition. It rose through the 1980s and reached its American peak in the early 1990s, with a singer of the name giving it a national profile at exactly that moment.

Not established
No inherited meaning. The name is generally understood as the Sha- prefix — one of the standard building blocks of African American name coinage — joined to the -nice ending of Janice or Denise. Neither part supplies a word, and the name does not need one to be a name.

The Jacquelyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shanice's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jacquelyn climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jacquelyn's path sketches the road Shanice is walking now.
Shanice sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It comes from a documented and deliberate naming tradition, which is a real history in itself.
- The end-stressed rhythm is uncommon in English and carries well when spoken.
- It is instantly recognizable while remaining uncommon.
- It has no inherited meaning, which matters to families for whom that is the point.
- Several spellings are in use, so the written form has to be given.
- The name is closely associated with the early 1990s.
