Shanelle
Feminine
The -elle ending is not decoration — it is a French grammatical suffix. Latin -ella made diminutive feminines, French inherited it, and it still marks the feminine in Danielle, Michelle, Gabrielle and Chantelle. Shanelle borrows a piece of French grammar that English itself does not have.

Our story of Shanelle
English has almost no way to mark a name as feminine. It lost grammatical gender centuries ago, has no obligatory feminine ending, and cannot inflect an adjective to agree with anything. What it does instead is borrow. The -elle of Danielle and Michelle is French, from the Latin diminutive -ella; the -ette of Annette and Paulette is the same suffix in another shape; the -ina of Christina is Latin, the -a of Roberta likewise. Every one of them is an import, and English uses them as bare signals rather than as grammar, because there is no system for them to fit into. Shanelle shows that clearly: a French suffix, an English respelling of a French consonant, and a stem that is a surname. The result is unmistakably a woman's name in America, assembled entirely from parts English does not own. It peaks in 1992.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Shanelle has no inherited meaning. It is generally a respelling of Chanel, a French surname of uncertain origin — possibly from a word for a pipe or channel, or a topographic name — carried by the couturier Gabrielle Chanel. The -elle ending is genuine French, from Latin -ella, and marks a feminine diminutive; the Sh- opening is an English respelling of the French ch. The compound as a whole is American.

The Lavona test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shanelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lavona climbed just as high around 1934, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lavona's path sketches the road Shanelle is walking now.
