Where it comes from

The story of Lavona

The tree at the end of that French chain outlives everything around it. Yews grow slowly, hollow out from the center so that ordinary ring-counting fails, and several in British churchyards are credibly older than the buildings beside them — some are thought to predate Christianity in those islands entirely, which would mean the churches were built beside the trees rather than the other way round. The wood is dense and springy and made longbows; every part of the plant is poisonous. A tree that kills, endures and arms an army is a strange thing to find at the far end of a name.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The prefix carries no sense and the element behind it is a piece of a name rather than a word. Nothing translatable comes through, whatever the French appearance suggests.

Pronouncing Lavona

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The prefix is unstressed and reduces, which is why the name is often heard as Vona alone.

Lavona sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1930, with 51 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Lavona sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Vona sits inside it as a complete and independent short form.
  • The rhythm is even and the spelling follows the sound exactly.
  • It is uncommon while containing no unfamiliar sound.
What to consider
  • Two other lengths of the same name are in use and get substituted.
  • There is no meaning to pass on, whatever other pages claim.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
