Shanae
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Trace this back far enough and it is five steps and four languages from a Hebrew sentence. Yochanan became Iohannes in Latin, Jehan in Norman French, Sean in Irish, Shane in English, and Shanae in America — and the sentence at the far end says God is gracious.

The story of Shanae
The chain is unusually well documented at every link. Yochanan is a Hebrew sentence-name. Greek and Latin took it as Ioannes. Norman French wore it down to Jehan. Irish, which had no j, rebuilt the front as Sean. English speakers who could not read Irish spelling wrote what they heard, giving Shane and Shaun. American parents then built feminines on the result. Five steps, and at no point did anyone consult the previous one. That is how most old names actually travel, and it is only visible here because every stage happens to be recorded.

God is gracious
If the name is built on Shane, the Anglicized Irish Sean, it descends from Hebrew Yochanan by way of four languages. It may equally be a modern compound of the Sha- opening with the -nae ending, in which case it has no meaning. Both are live and the spelling does not choose.

The Carolynn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shanae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carolynn climbed just as high around 1942, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carolynn's path sketches the road Shanae is walking now.
Shanae sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One of its two possible histories is documented at every step across four languages.
- Three short forms, two of which serve either child.
- Two syllables with an unmistakable stress once it is settled.
- Shanay, Shenae and Shanea are all in use, so the spelling will be given every time.
- The stress is unsettled between the two syllables.
- If the name is a modern compound rather than a Shane form, it has no meaning at all.
