Shaliyah
Feminine
The -iyah at the end of a hundred American names is a piece of Arabic grammar. It is the nisba, the ending that turns a noun into an adjective of belonging: Arab gives Arabiyya, Syria gives Suriyya, Ali gives Aliyya. It is doing no grammatical work here, but it is not invented.

The story of Shaliyah
The nisba is one of the most productive endings in Arabic and it works on almost anything: a place, a tribe, a trade, a person. Attach it and you have an adjective meaning of that thing, and the feminine adds an a. That is where the -iyya in a great many Arabic words and names comes from, and it is why so many of them look alike. American naming borrowed the sound of that ending in the 1990s and attached it to syllables rather than to nouns, so the grammar came without anything to govern. It is worth saying plainly rather than either inventing a meaning or dismissing the name: the ending is real, and this particular arrangement of letters is new.

The Jonda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shaliyah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jonda climbed just as high around 1965, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jonda's path sketches the road Shaliyah is walking now.
Shaliyah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
