Shaka
Masculine
Shaka is given to both — 697 boys and 142 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Shaka built a kingdom out of a small chiefdom in a single lifetime. He reorganized how the Zulu fought, absorbed his neighbors, and left behind a state that the British Empire needed a full war to break a half-century later. Whatever else is argued about him — and a great deal is — the scale of what he did in about a decade is not in dispute.

The story of Shaka
Shaka kaSenzangakhona ruled in the early nineteenth century in what is now KwaZulu-Natal, and the kingdom he assembled reshaped the whole region. His name reached American naming through a specific channel: from the late 1960s onward, African American families began choosing names from African languages and African history deliberately, as an act of connection and refusal at once. Shaka belongs to that movement, alongside Kwame, Kenyatta and Malik. It arrived here as a decision rather than an inheritance, which is worth saying plainly.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Zulu tradition explains the name through a story rather than a word: that his mother's pregnancy was denied and attributed instead to iShaka, an intestinal complaint, and the child was named for the excuse. That account is well attested in the oral histories and is what Zulu speakers will tell you. Whether it is the actual derivation or a story attached afterward cannot be established.
Pronouncing Shaka
SHAH-kah
Two syllables, both open, stress on the first. Zulu says it much as the spelling suggests to an English reader, which is unusual and convenient. It is not related to the Hawaiian hand gesture of the same spelling, though Americans will often think of that first.

The Thayne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shaka's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Thayne climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Thayne's path sketches the road Shaka is walking now.
Shaka sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two open syllables and five letters — easy to say, easy to spell, and it sits well with any surname.
- It carries a documented historical figure of real consequence rather than a general flavor.
- The name is unmistakable, and a child will rarely meet another.
- It is recorded for girls as well as boys in America, though the Zulu king's name is a man's.
- The historical figure is genuinely contested — admired as a founder and criticized for the violence of the campaigns — and a child will meet both readings.
- In America the spelling is shared with a Hawaiian gesture, which is what many people will think of first.
- It reads as a deliberate choice rather than a family inheritance, and that will occasionally prompt questions.
