Serinity
Feminine · “Latin serenus”
Serenity is a weather word. Latin serenus means clear and cloudless, and it was used of the sky before it was used of a person. The Venetian republic called itself La Serenissima, the most serene, and Your Serene Highness is still a form of address for certain European princes. A word about weather became a title.

The story of Serinity
Honorific abstractions were a late Roman invention and several of them survive. An emperor was addressed not as you but as your Clemency, your Serenity, your Majesty or your Eternity, and the practice spread through Byzantine and then medieval European court usage. Majesty and Highness stayed in general royal use; Serene Highness attached specifically to the smaller sovereign princes of the Holy Roman Empire and survives for Monaco and Liechtenstein. Venice took the adjective for itself: the Most Serene Republic, La Serenissima, used it for eleven hundred years. Underneath all of it is a description of a clear sky. That kind of drift from a physical description to a term of rank is common, and Latin supplied a great many of them: illustrious once meant lit up, and eminent meant sticking out.
