Michael has produced three separate women's names in English, and they arrived from three different languages. Michelle is French and ends in a consonant; Michaela is Latin and adds a syllable; Michella takes the French front and gives it an Italian-looking ending. All three mean the same thing, and what they mean is a question rather than a statement.

Where it comes from

The story of Michella

Michel is the French form of Michael and Michelle its feminine, and the pair became enormously popular in twentieth-century France and then America. Latin had already produced Michaela, which Spanish, Italian and German all use. Michella is the American hybrid: the French spelling of the front with an -a ending that reads as Italian. It appears in the record from the late 1940s and peaked around 1970, which puts it alongside Michelle's own American peak rather than after it.

Meaning

who is like God

From the Hebrew Mikha'el, which is a rhetorical question — asked with the answer understood to be nobody. It belongs to the archangel who leads the heavenly armies in Daniel and Revelation, and the question is his war cry rather than a piece of humility.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Michella went to 6 girls in 2025, but Michela is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 14, which makes it the 946th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,262 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 114,805 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Michella itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ella is available and is among the most current short forms in the country.
  • The name behind it is honored in three religious traditions.
  • Three open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
What to consider
  • Michelle and Michaela are both far commoner and will be written instead.
  • The ch is a sh in French and a k in Italian, so international relatives will disagree.
  • It belongs to a mid-century American generation and reads that way.
