Where it comes from

The story of Michela

Michael is one of the two archangels named in the Hebrew scriptures and the only one described as fighting, and the question in his name is traditionally read as what he says while doing it. The name spread everywhere Christianity did and produced feminines in most languages: Michelle in French, Michaela in German and Latin, Micaela in Spanish, Michela in Italian. The Italian form is worth its own note because of the ch. In Italian, ch before e or i is a hard k — chi is kee, chiesa is kyeh-za — so Michela is mee-KEH-lah, and the French Michelle, spelled almost identically, is not.

Meaning

who is like God?

Hebrew Mikha'el, made of mi, who, kha, like, and el, God. Hebrew builds a great many names as short sentences, and this one is a challenge rather than a claim. Michela is the Italian feminine, formed from Michele, which is the Italian masculine and not the French one.

Michela sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 99 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Michela went to 8 girls in 2025, but Michella is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 14, which makes it the 946th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,971 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 114,805 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Michela itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Hebrew meaning that is a complete sentence rather than an adjective.
  • It is a full, ordinary name in Italian rather than a respelling.
  • One of the largest name families in the world stands behind it, in every European language.
What to consider
  • English readers will say the ch as sh, which produces Michelle and not this name.
  • Michaela, Micaela and Mikayla are all commoner in America.
  • It is close enough to Michelle to be assumed a misspelling of it.
