The story of Sebastion
Sebastian was a Roman soldier martyred under Diocletian, and the manner of his death, tied to a post and shot with arrows, made him one of the most painted saints in Europe; he was also invoked against plague, which kept his cult enormous through the Middle Ages. The name has been ordinary in Spain, Italy, Germany and Poland ever since. It rose sharply in English-speaking countries in the two-thousands, and respellings arrived with the popularity.
Meaning
from Sebaste; venerable
Greek sebastos, venerable or revered, which translated the Latin augustus. The city of Sebaste took the name in the emperor's honor, and Sebastianus means a man from there, so the name carries the honorific at one remove.
