The story of Sarkis
Saint Sarkis the Warrior is among the most venerated saints in the Armenian Apostolic Church, a fourth-century commander honored with a fast and a feast that has become the Armenian day for young love. His name has been one of the standard Armenian men's names for fifteen hundred years. Armenians arrived in the United States in large numbers between 1915 and 1923, fleeing the massacres and deportations in the Ottoman Empire, and American naming records register that arrival directly: Sarkis, Kevork, Hagop and Vartan all cluster in exactly those years. Sarkis's best year on file is 1923.

servant, attendant
Armenian Sarkis descends from Latin Sergius, a Roman gens name whose own origin is not recovered. The commonly printed reading servant or attendant comes from a proposed Etruscan or Latin root and is not secure. What is certain is the chain: Sergius to Greek Sergios to Armenian Sarkis, with the vowel and consonant shifts that Armenian regularly applies to Greek borrowings.
