The story of Sari
The Uralic family covers Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Sami and a set of smaller languages spoken across northern Russia and Siberia. Hungarian and Finnish separated perhaps six thousand years ago and are no longer mutually intelligible in any degree, but the relationship is secure: the grammar matches in structure, with a large number of cases and no grammatical gender, and a core vocabulary of body parts, numbers and kinship terms lines up. Hungarian arrived in the Carpathian basin at the end of the ninth century and has been surrounded by Slavic and Germanic languages ever since, borrowing heavily from both while keeping its own grammar entirely. Neither language has grammatical gender, so the sex of a name is a matter of use rather than of form, and both have distinctive diminutive systems that produce names like Sari.
Meaning
Hebrew Sarah, lady or princess
Sari is the Hungarian diminutive of Sara and an independent Finnish given name, both descending from Hebrew sarah, a woman of rank. The garment called a sari is from Sanskrit sati, a strip of cloth, and has no connection to the name. Sari is also a word in several other languages. It peaks in the American data in 1956.

The Wenona test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sari's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wenona climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wenona's path sketches the road Sari is walking now.
Sari sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
