Santonio
Masculine · “From Spanish San Antonio”
Santonio starts with a title, not a name. San is Spanish for saint — an honorific placed before a name — and in Santonio it has fused into the word itself, so the title has become a syllable. The same process turned San Antonio, a city named on a saint's feast day, into a single spoken unit.

The story of Santonio
Spanish naming uses San and Santo as honorifics that can attach to almost anything, and place names carry them wholesale: San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Fe. San Antonio in Texas was named on 13 June 1691, the feast of Anthony of Padua, by a Spanish expedition that reached the river that day — the title and the name arrived together and have never been separated since. In American given-name records the fused form appears from the 1960s and peaks in 1975. The fusion of a title into a name is not unusual: Santiago is Sant Iago, Saint James, fused so completely that Spanish speakers do not hear the title in it at all, and the same process is visible here in progress.

From Spanish San Antonio, "Saint Anthony"
The most likely source is the fusion of San and Antonio, either from the saint's name or from the Texas city named for him. A second possibility is the pattern of Santos, saints, used as a given name in Spanish, extended with an -onio ending. Antonius itself has no established meaning. Whichever route applies, the reading is a saint's title plus a Roman family name, not a word with a translatable sense.

The Nicanor test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Santonio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nicanor climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nicanor's path sketches the road Santonio is walking now.
Santonio sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
