Saniah
Feminine · “Arabic saniyya”
Arabic builds words from three consonants. The root gives the meaning, the vowels poured into it give the grammar. From s-n-w, a root about height and radiance, come sana, to gleam, sanaa, brilliance, and the adjective sani, exalted, whose feminine is saniyya. Saniah is that feminine adjective written in English letters, and it peaks in 2007.

The story of Saniah
Root-and-pattern morphology is the organizing fact of the Arabic language and it explains why so many Arabic names feel related to each other. A speaker who knows the root k-t-b, writing, can recognize kitab as a book, katib as a writer, maktab as an office and maktaba as a library, without having learned any of them separately. Names work the same way. Saniyya is not an arbitrary sound: it is the feminine of a regular adjective pattern, and an Arabic speaker parses it on sight. This is also why transliteration is so unstable. The Arabic script writes the consonants of the root and the long vowels and leaves the short vowels to the reader, so any romanisation has to make choices the original never made. Six English spellings of one name is not carelessness; it is what happens when a writing system that omits information is converted into one that cannot.
Meaning
Arabic saniyya, brilliant or exalted
From the Arabic root s-n-w, associated with elevation and radiance. The masculine adjective is sani, the feminine saniyya, and the name is used across the Arabic-speaking world. English transliterations include Saniyya, Saniya, Sania and Saniah. The final -ah spelling represents the Arabic ta marbuta, the letter that marks feminine nouns and adjectives and which is written as h in one common romanisation system and as a in another.

About 1 girl in 5,340 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Saniah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
