Alexander became a Scottish royal name through three medieval kings, and Scots speech made Sandy from it — a back-clipping rather than the usual front one. Scottish emigration brought it to America, where Sandy was registered for boys through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, peaking around 1958 before the feminine use overtook it.
