Where it comes from

The story of Samera

The vocabulary is precise in a way English is not. Samar is the conversation, musamara is the act of having it, and a samir or samira is the person you have it with; classical Arabic poetry uses the words constantly, because before artificial light the hours after dark were when people talked. That is the whole of the name and it is unusually specific for a personal name in any language. There is a separate word that looks like it and is unrelated: Samaria, the city and the region, is named in the book of Kings after a man called Shemer who owned the hill and sold it, which is a much duller derivation and a completely different root.

Meaning

companion in evening conversation

Arabic samira, the feminine of samir, from samar, conversation by night. The root carries a sense of talking in the dark, and the name names a role rather than a quality. Samera is one of several American transliterations of it.

Samera sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 30 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Samera went to 7 girls in 2025, but Sameera is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 30, which makes it the 930th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,002 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 53,576 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Samera itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Arabic meaning that is unusually specific and easy to remember.
  • Three short forms, one of which serves either child.
  • Three open syllables with a clear central stress.
What to consider
  • Samira is the standard international spelling and has a different middle vowel.
  • It is close enough to Samara, Samantha and Sabrina to be misheard as any of them.
  • The e in this spelling shortens a vowel the Arabic holds long.
