The story of Samad
Surah al-Ikhlas is four short verses that state the divine unity, and the second of them calls God aṣ-Ṣamad. The word occurs nowhere else in the Qur'an, which is why its meaning has been so much discussed. As a name it is used across the Arab world, Iran, Turkey, South Asia and West Africa, most often in the compound Abd al-Samad. American records show Samad from the 1960s with immigration and, separately, through African American Muslim naming, with a peak in 1983.

The Eternal, the Self-Sufficient, the Absolute
Arabic ṣamad appears once in the Qur'an, in Surah 112, and its precise sense is genuinely debated by Arabic lexicographers: eternal, self-sufficient, the one to whom all turn in need, and solid or without hollowness have all been offered. It is a divine attribute, so human bearers strictly take Abd al-Samad, servant of the Eternal, though Samad alone is used freely.
