The story of Sallie
English has a small set of pet forms made by consonant substitution — Mary to Molly, Margaret to Meg, Sarah to Sally — and no one has fully explained why the language did it to those names and not others. Sally was in ordinary use by the seventeenth century and had become a legal name by the eighteenth. Sallie is the American spelling of it, favored in the nineteenth century when the -ie ending looked warmer than the -y, and it stood in the national top seventy in the 1880s.
Meaning
princess, noblewoman
Through Sarah, from the Hebrew sarah, 'princess' or 'noblewoman'. Genesis gives the name a change of its own: the woman is called Sarai until she is renamed Sarah, and the text treats the new name as a promise about her descendants.
