The Sabians are one of the great puzzles of Quranic scholarship. The text names them three times among the People of the Book, alongside Jews and Christians, and then says nothing more; nobody has established with certainty who they were. Whether the modern American name refers to them is a separate question. Its peak is 1999.

Where it comes from

Our story of Sabian

The Harran episode is worth telling. The Quran granted protected status to the Sabians without defining them, and in the ninth century the pagan community of Harran in northern Mesopotamia — worshippers of the planets, inheritors of a Hellenistic philosophical tradition — took the name for themselves and were accepted under it. They survived for another two centuries and produced some of the finest translators and mathematicians of the Abbasid period, including Thabit ibn Qurra. Whether they were the Sabians the Quran meant is doubted by everyone; the identification saved them and preserved a body of Greek learning that might otherwise have been lost. A name that could refer to that is carrying something considerable, whether or not the family knew.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Sabians of the Quran have been identified with the Mandaeans of southern Iraq, with the star-worshipping community of Harran, with early Jewish-Christian baptismal sects, and with several other groups; the question is genuinely open. The word may come from a Semitic root meaning to immerse or baptize. As an American given name, Sabian is at least as likely to be a respelling of Fabian or Sabin, or a construction on the -ian ending, and no route can be shown.
