The story of Ruperto
The drops are made by letting molten glass fall into cold water. The outside cools and hardens while the inside is still shrinking, which puts the whole thing under enormous internal tension: the head will survive a hammer blow, and breaking the thin tail releases the tension all at once, so the entire drop disintegrates into dust in a fraction of a millisecond. Prince Rupert brought some to England in the 1660s and gave them to the king, who passed them to the Royal Society, which spent decades failing to explain them. High-speed photography finally settled it three centuries later.
Meaning
bright fame
The Germanic compound is made of the words for fame and brightness, and it produced Robert in the north and Rupert in the south of the German-speaking world. Spanish and Italian took the southern form and added their own ending. Rupert reached English mainly through one man, a German prince who commanded cavalry in the English civil war and stayed.
