Where it comes from

The story of Ruffus

A ruff is a wading bird, and it is named after the Elizabethan collar because the males grow one. In spring each male develops an enormous head and neck ruff, in colors that vary so wildly between individuals that almost no two are alike, and they display on a communal ground where females come to choose. The female is not called a ruff; she is a reeve, which is an old English word for an official, and the pairing is one of very few in English where the sexes of one species have entirely unrelated names. The species also has three genetically distinct male types — the territorial ones, smaller paler ones that sneak, and rare males that look like females — and the difference turns out to be a single inverted chunk of chromosome.

Meaning

red-haired

A Roman personal nickname from the Latin adjective for red, of the same kind as Flavus for fair and Niger for dark. Roman nicknames were often blunt physical descriptions and became hereditary regardless of whether they still fitted.

Pronouncing Ruffus

ROO-fus

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled f would normally shorten the vowel before it in English, and here it does not, which makes the spelling slightly misleading.

Ruffus sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 31 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Ruffus sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is documented and concrete.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • It is genuinely rare while being entirely readable at first sight.
What to consider
  • Rufus is the standard spelling and this will be corrected constantly.
  • The doubled letter suggests a short vowel the name does not have.
  • It is a common dog's name, which readers will notice.
