Where it comes from

The story of Rudolfo

The best-known man to carry the name in America carried it in the Italian spelling and then abandoned it. Rudolph Valentino was born Rodolfo, in a small town in Puglia, and the studios shortened and anglicized him on the way to becoming the first male film star whose appeal was built entirely on how he looked. When he died suddenly in his early thirties the crowds outside the funeral home in New York turned into a riot and the police had to be called. The name went where he went. Spanish and Italian families in America had been using it for decades before that and continued afterwards, but for a generation the association was one man, and it was an association about glamour rather than about wolves.

Meaning

famous wolf

Two Germanic elements: the first meaning fame or glory, the second meaning wolf. Compounds of this kind rarely make a single sensible phrase, and this one is a good example. The parts are what carried meaning, not the whole.

Fashion outlook

Rudolfo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a full set of short forms in two languages, all of them ready-made.
  • The rhythm is confident and the name carries well at length.
  • It is instantly placeable by Spanish and Italian speakers alike.
What to consider
  • Rodolfo is standard in both languages the ending comes from, so this spelling gets corrected.
  • The English form of the name is attached to a Christmas song and that follows it around.
  • It is long, and English speakers will shorten it immediately.
