The story of Rube
Reuben Garrett Lucius Goldberg, an engineer turned cartoonist, drew absurd chains of pulleys, birds and bowling balls to do simple jobs like wiping a mouth, and a Rube Goldberg machine is now the name for anything needlessly complicated. Andrew 'Rube' Foster, a star pitcher who earned his nickname by beating the great Rube Waddell, founded the Negro National League in 1920, the first lasting league for Black players. Rube also became American slang for a country bumpkin, which is why it faded as a name.
