The story of Rosaly
Rosalia of Palermo left the Norman court to live alone on Monte Pellegrino, and her cave is still a shrine reached by a road cut into the cliff. The finding of her relics during a plague made her the city's patron, and the July festival for her is one of the largest in Sicily. The name spread through Italy, France and Spain, and came to American records with Italian and Latin American families; Rosaly is a Spanish-influenced spelling of it.

rose
Latin rosa, a rose, with a diminutive or adjectival ending, is the usual reading and gives something like little rose or rose-like. A Germanic compound of hros, a horse, and hild, battle, has also been proposed for the medieval name, and the two may have merged.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
