The story of Rosaleigh
Rose entered English through Norman French as a personal name whose flower meaning was probably a reinterpretation of a Germanic compound — medieval namers were as fond of a good folk etymology as anyone. The flower reading stuck and gave Rosa, Rosalie, Rosanna and a large family besides. Leigh came from the other end of English entirely, as a place-name element and then a surname. Rosaleigh joins the two in the current American habit of building compound girls' names from an old first half and an -leigh ending.

rose, and a woodland clearing
The second half is straightforward: -leigh is Old English leah, a clearing, and it is documented across hundreds of English place-names. The first half is not. Rosa is the Latin for a rose and that is the reading most people assume; but the medieval name Rosa may come instead from Germanic hros, 'horse', or hrod, 'fame', with the flower attached later by association. Both lines are old and neither has won.

The trade-off
- Both halves are real name elements with documented histories.
- Rosa, Rose and Leigh are three ready short forms and all three stand alone.
- Three syllables with a light ending, which pairs well with most surnames.
- Rosaleigh, Rosalee, Rosalie and Rosaly are all in use and none of them is standard.
- The -leigh spelling adds three letters that change nothing you can hear.
- Rosalie is far more established and this name will be corrected to it.
