Where it comes from

The story of Rosalea

The metaphor is explicit in medieval devotional writing: a collection of prayers is a garland, a chaplet, a crown of roses offered to the Virgin, and rosarium was used for anthologies of any kind before it settled on the bead-counted prayer. The physical beads existed earlier as a counting aid; the name attached in the fifteenth century as the Dominican devotion spread. Rose imagery around Mary runs deep — the rose without thorns, the mystical rose of the Litany of Loreto — and it supplied a whole family of names: Rosa, Rosalia, Rosario, Rosalind by coincidence, Rosaria. Rosalea peaks in America in 1934.

Meaning

Latin "of the roses"

From rosa, a rose, through Rosalia — both the Roman spring festival of roses and the name of Saint Rosalia of Palermo. Rosalie is the French form, and Rosalea is an American respelling. Rosarium, the rose garden, gave the rosary by metaphor; the two words are related but the names Rosalia and Rosario descend from different applications of the same root.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
