Corinthia
Feminine · “Of Corinth”
The most elaborate of the classical column types is named after Corinth and the Greeks barely used it. They invented it, put it in a handful of buildings, and left it there; the Romans took it up and used it for nearly everything, which is why it now reads as the standard imperial style.

The story of Corinthia
The city was destroyed and refounded with freed slaves. Rome leveled Corinth in the middle of the second century before Christ, killed or enslaved the population and left the site empty for a hundred years; Julius Caesar then refounded it as a Roman colony and settled it largely with freedmen from Italy, so the Corinth that Paul wrote his letters to was a new, mixed, commercial city about a century old rather than an ancient Greek one. That explains a good deal about those letters, which are addressed to a congregation with no settled traditions in a place where everybody had arrived recently and nobody's grandparents had lived.
Meaning
Of Corinth
The city's own name is pre-Greek and its meaning has never been recovered, which is true of a good many of the oldest place names in Greece. So the name means belonging to a city whose name nobody can read, and everything it carries is association rather than sense.

Fashion outlook
Corinthia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Cora and Thia are two short forms that are both current and sound nothing alike.
- The place behind it is real, famous and easy to look up.
- The rhythm is easy and every sound is available to an English speaker.
- Four syllables is a great deal of name and will be shortened by other people at once.
- It will be heard as Cynthia, which is far commoner and unrelated.
- There is no meaning to give a child, because the city's own name is unexplained.
