Rosalba

Rosa alba is a white rose, and alba is one of the most productive words in Europe. It gives the Alps, named for their snow, Albion, the white cliffs, albumen, the white of an egg, and album, which originally meant a white tablet on which public notices were written. A Roman noticeboard and a photograph collection are the same word.

The story of Rosalba
Rosalba Carriera was among the most successful painters in Europe in her lifetime and is now largely forgotten outside specialist collections. She worked in pastel, a medium she helped make fashionable for serious portraiture, was elected to the Roman Academy of St Luke in 1705, and traveled to Paris in 1720 where she painted the court and was admitted to the French Academy. Her sitters included Louis XV as a child. She went blind in her sixties and stopped working. The alba in her name runs through the European vocabulary in ways that are mostly invisible: the Alps are probably named for their whiteness, Albion is the oldest name for Britain and may refer to the chalk cliffs, and album is a Latin neuter meaning a white surface, used for the boards on which magistrates posted notices, which is how a book of blank pages came to have the name.
