Where it comes from

Our story of Ronn

Ronin is written with two characters meaning wave and person: a wave man, somebody adrift. The word was in use in Japan before the samurai sense attached to it, for peasants who had left their land and were wandering, and it kept that flavor of drifting rather than of heroism. A samurai became a ronin when his lord died or dismissed him, and under the Tokugawa peace there were a great many of them, unemployed and armed, which the government regarded as a serious problem rather than a romance. The most famous story about them, the revenge of the forty-seven, ends with the survivors being ordered to kill themselves, and it became popular precisely because it made a virtue out of a social crisis.

It may shorten Ronald, which is Norse, or Aaron, which is Hebrew, or stand alone. The two are unrelated and the record holds the short form without saying which it came from.

Pronouncing Ronn

RON

One syllable. The doubled n changes nothing: English doubles a consonant to protect a short vowel, and at the end of a word there is nothing to protect.

Fashion outlook

Ronn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable is quick, clear and hard to mishear across a room.
  • It is understood instantly and needs no introduction anywhere.
  • The affectionate form is ready-made and universally known.
What to consider
  • Ron is the standard spelling and this will be corrected constantly.
  • The doubled letter is inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as a short form even when it is the registered name.
