Rondell
Masculine · “counsel and protection”
Rondell is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,798 boys against 67 girls since 1880.
A rondel is a real French thing: a small round object, a disc, and also a fixed verse form of thirteen lines that comes back to its own opening. Rondell, in American naming, is Ron with the -ell suffix, and it lands on that word by accident.

The story of Rondell
The -ell suffix was one of the two great feminising and softening endings of mid-century American naming, and unlike the French -elle it worked freely on men's names as well: Rondell, Donell, Darnell, Terrell, Montell and Jerrell all belong to the same period and the same mechanism. The base is usually a monosyllabic name already in use, and the ending adds a syllable and moves the stress to the end. Rondell's best year in United States records is 1978, at the height of that family's run, and the coincidence with the French word is real but is not the source.

counsel and protection, or a small round thing
If the name is Ron plus the -ell suffix, the source is Ronald, from Old Norse Rognvaldr, combining regin, counsel or the gods, with valdr, ruler. If it is taken directly from the French rondel, the meaning is a small circle, from rond, round, and thence a medieval verse form. The first is much the likelier route for an American name peaking in 1978.

The Elston test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rondell's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Elston climbed just as high around 1961, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Elston's path sketches the road Rondell is walking now.
Rondell sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
