The d in this name has moved forward past two letters. Ronald has it at the end; Rondal has it in the middle, with the a and the l shifted behind it — a transposition rather than a substitution, and the kind of slip that happens when a name is written quickly and then copied by somebody else.

Where it comes from

The story of Rondal

The Norse name behind it belonged to a line of earls who ruled the northern isles for four centuries. Orkney and Shetland were Norwegian territory rather than Scottish until the fifteenth century, governed by earls who answered to Norway, and several of them carried this name — one of them founded the cathedral at Kirkwall for an uncle who had been murdered and later made a saint. The islands were eventually pledged to Scotland as security for a dowry that was never paid, which is a remarkably casual way for two archipelagos to change countries.

Meaning

counsel and rule

Two Norse elements, one meaning advice or decision and one meaning ruler. The compound is well attested and the transposition here does not touch the sense.

How the name formed

  1. Rögnvaldr
  2. Ronald
  3. Rondal

Pronouncing Rondal

RON-dul

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The transposition is audible here, unlike most respellings, because the consonants have genuinely swapped places.

Fashion outlook

Rondal sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ron and Ronnie both sit inside it as completely familiar short forms.
  • The meaning is transparent once the two Norse elements are pointed out.
  • The spelling gives no trouble once the order is taken as read.
What to consider
  • It will be read as a misspelling of a very common name, always.
  • The transposition changes the sound, so the name is mispronounced as well.
  • The generation that used it is now elderly.
